GI-REC provided an overview of what opportunities are available to deepen urban metabolism analysis. Construction materials was the recommended starting point to have a better understanding of the role and sustainability of local mines and existing limitations (e.g. forecast shortage of sand). It also looked at the 2018 water crisis in Cape Town.

The study identified gaps in urban metabolism studies and prioritized actions in Cape Town to eliminate blocks in science-based policy-making.
